Hi, foodies here is a new recipe from The Crushed Saffron. Today I am going to share the secret recipe of a popular Bengali dish, Alu Posto. Posto means the poppy-seeds, and Alu means potato. Alu Posto means potato chunks dipped in poppy-seed gravy. The dish is special as Bengali likes to have their lunch Alu Posto and Biulir Dal with plain steamed rice.
How to make Alu-Posto:
Ingredients:
- Potato(Alu)-350gms
- 2 medium size onions
- Green Chilli, slit, 6-7 nos
- Poppy-Seeds(Khus-khus or Posto), 20-25 gms
- Nigella-Seeds(Kalonji or Kalo Jeera),1/2 Tsp
- Mustard Oil, 2 tbsp
- Salt to taste
- Sugar to taste
Process:
- First, wash the potatoes, peel them, cut the potatoes into 1 cm chunks & wash them again well.
- Then, soak the poppy seeds in lukewarm water for 30 min and strain out all the water and keep them aside.
- Now, make a smooth paste of onions, poppy seeds and 5 nos of slitted green chillis. Make sure the paste is smooth enough, otherwise it will ruin the Alu-Posto taste.
- Heat up 1 tbsp of mustard oil in a medium bottom pan & add 2 nos of green chillis and 1/2 tsp of nigella seeds (kalonji or Kalo-jeera) and saute them. Be careful, the nigella seeds will burn on high heat.
- Now, add the potato chunks & saute them for 5 mins.
- After 5 min, add the pre-made paste of onions, poppy and green chillis. Keep stirring, poppy tends to stick to the pan.
- Add salt and sugar to taste. If you want sweeter Alu Posto then add more sugar otherwise just add a little bit.
- Now, add 125 gms or 1/2 cup of lukewarm water & cover up with a lid for around 10-15min on low heat.
- If the potato chunks are undone then cook it for another 2 min.
- Alu-Posto is ready. now, drizzle a little amount of mustard oil & serve hot with steamed rice and Biulir Dal(another famous Bengali recipe).
